It is best known globally as the primary species cultivated for its edible fruit, commonly referred to as kiwi or kiwifruit. As a climbing plant, it requires sturdy structural support such as T-bars or pergola systems to facilitate commercial production and canopy management.

The species is native to mainland China and Taiwan, historically known as the Chinese gooseberry. In the early 20th century, it was introduced to New Zealand, where selective breeding led to the development of the high-yielding cultivars used in global trade today. It thrives in temperate to subtropical climates with high humidity, sufficient rainfall, and protection from late spring frosts.

Botanically, it is a dioecious species, meaning separate male and female plants are necessary for pollination. The plant produces distinctive fuzzy, oval berries with emerald green flesh and small, edible black seeds. The vine is vigorous, characterized by large, heart-shaped leaves and a sprawling growth habit that necessitates aggressive annual pruning to maintain productivity.

To ensure optimal growth, Actinidia deliciosa requires deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soils with a high content of organic matter.
