Saucer magnolia

Saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) is a popular hybrid deciduous shrub or small tree belonging to the Magnoliaceae family. Developed in France in the 19th century as a cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, it is widely prized for its spectacular display of early spring flowers that bloom before the foliage emerges.

Botanically, this species is noted for its spreading, multi-stemmed habit and its large, bowl-shaped blossoms which can reach up to 25 centimeters in diameter. The flowers come in various shades, ranging from pure white to deep pink and dark purple. Its leaves are broad, obovate, and bright green, providing a lush texture to the garden landscape during the summer months.

The cultural requirements for Saucer magnolia include a sunny to partially shaded location with protection from harsh winds, which can damage the delicate petals. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic, and humus-rich soils. The tree is generally sensitive to heavy clay or alkaline soils, which may cause nutrient deficiencies, specifically chlorosis, affecting overall plant vigor.

Maintenance practices involve consistent watering, particularly during the first few years after planting and during dry summer spells. Mulching with organic matter is highly recommended to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature around the shallow root system. Pruning should be kept to a minimum and performed immediately after flowering to shape the crown and remove any dead or damaged wood.

The plant is primarily used as an ornamental specimen in parks, private gardens, and urban landscapes. While relatively hardy once established, it is susceptible to certain biological threats:
