Woolly thistle (Cirsium eriophorum) is a biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its distinct appearance, the plant derives its common name from the thick, cobweb-like wool that covers the flower heads. While often viewed as an agricultural weed, it is a significant species in biodiversity-rich grasslands and meadows across Europe.
The plant originates from the temperate regions of Europe, thriving in limestone soils and chalky substrates. It is commonly found in pastures, forest clearings, and disturbed grounds. Cirsium eriophorum prefers well-drained, sunny habitats and shows remarkable resilience in challenging environmental conditions where other plants might struggle.
Botanically, the woolly thistle develops a deep taproot and a robust stem during its second year, which can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. The leaves are deeply lobed and armed with stiff, sharp spines. Chemical controls are sometimes employed, but manual or cultural practices are generally preferred in sustainable farming.
