Silver rockrose

The Silver rockrose (Cistus x argenteus) is a hybrid evergreen shrub belonging to the Cistaceae family. It is highly valued for its striking silvery-grey foliage and delicate, paper-thin flowers that create a sophisticated visual impact in landscape design.

Originating from the Mediterranean basin, this plant is naturally adapted to rugged, rocky terrain and dry environmental conditions. It is widely cultivated in regions with warm, mild climates, where it thrives in well-drained, nutrient-poor soil, mimicking its native ecological habitat.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its compact, rounded growth habit, typically reaching 60–90 cm in height. The foliage is covered in fine, silvery hairs, which serve as a natural defense mechanism against intense solar radiation. The flowers are generally white or pinkish with distinct dark spots at the base, blooming profusely during late spring and early summer.

In terms of agricultural and horticultural requirements, it demands full sun exposure and excellent soil drainage. It is notoriously intolerant of waterlogged soil, which often leads to root decay. Fertilizer use should be kept to a minimum, as excessive nutrients can negatively affect the plant’s longevity and natural compact form.

Common issues include susceptibility to root rot if drainage is insufficient and occasional infestations by aphids or spider mites in stressed plants. Despite these risks, it remains a preferred choice for xeriscaping and sustainable gardening due to its high drought tolerance and low maintenance needs. Maintenance involves annual pruning after the flowering season to prevent the plant from becoming woody and sparse.
