Western coralroot is a perennial, non-photosynthetic plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a specialized mycoheterotroph, meaning it relies entirely on a symbiotic relationship with soil fungi to obtain nutrients. These fungi act as intermediaries, transferring organic compounds from neighboring trees to the orchid.
The native range of this species spans Western North America, from Alaska down through the coastal regions of California and extending into the Rocky Mountains. It thrives in shaded, moist coniferous forests, where the forest floor provides the stable conditions necessary for its specific fungal partners to flourish.
Botanically, the plant lacks green foliage, possessing only scale-like leaves along its upright, reddish-purple or yellowish stalk. The roots, which resemble clusters of coral, are the primary vegetative organs responsible for managing the symbiotic exchange.
