It is distinct from traditional agricultural crops due to its myco-heterotrophic lifestyle. Lacking chlorophyll, this plant cannot perform photosynthesis and relies entirely on carbon acquired from specific soil fungi to survive and complete its life cycle.
This species is native to North America, primarily found in the eastern and central regions of the United States. It thrives in deciduous and mixed forest habitats where a thick layer of leaf litter supports the growth of the fungal mycelia (specifically species of Russula) that are essential for the orchid's nutritional uptake.

Its common name, "coralroot," refers to its underground rhizomes, which are fleshy, branched, and resemble coral reefs.
