Missouri foxtail cactus (Coryphantha missouriensis, also known as Escobaria missouriensis) is a perennial succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. Unlike many exotic cacti that thrive only in tropical climates, this species is noted for its remarkable hardiness and ability to endure significant temperature fluctuations.
The native range of this cactus spans across North America, including the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. It naturally occurs in open, arid grasslands and rocky outcrops, where it has evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor, limestone-based soils and survive periods of prolonged drought and harsh winter conditions.
Botanically, the plant features a solitary or clustered globular stem covered with tubercles. The spination is dense, often obscuring the stem, which serves to protect the plant from harsh solar radiation. The flowers are typically yellow-green or straw-colored, emerging from the center of the plant, and are followed by persistent, bright red, berry-like fruits.
Agrotechnical requirements for this species emphasize the necessity of a well-draining, gritty soil mix. Over-watering is the primary cause of failure in cultivation; therefore, the substrate must be highly porous. The plant requires full sun exposure to maintain its compact shape and healthy spination, alongside a distinct period of winter dormancy characterized by dryness and cool temperatures.
