Cryptantha barbigera, commonly known as the bearded cryptantha or beard-leaved cryptantha, is a herbaceous annual plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. While not a commercial field crop, it serves as a critical model for understanding how plants thrive in the harsh, arid climates of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.

The plant originates from the desert ecosystems of North America, particularly within the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. Its natural habitat is characterized by sandy or gravelly soils with minimal water availability. It is highly specialized, having evolved to complete its life cycle rapidly during the brief period of spring moisture before the onset of extreme summer heat.

Morphologically, Cryptantha barbigera is distinguished by its hirsute, or hairy, appearance, which provides a protective barrier against solar radiation and dehydration. It features small, white, five-petaled flowers with a yellow throat, arranged in characteristic coiled cymes.
