The Tufted Cryptantha (Cryptantha caespitosa) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. While not a conventional industrial crop, it serves as a highly specialized plant for horticulture, particularly in regions focused on dry-land gardening and alpine plant cultivation.
The native distribution of this species is centered in the western United States, notably within Wyoming and Montana. It naturally occurs in harsh, rugged environments, such as rocky slopes and elevated plains. This evolutionary history makes the plant exceptionally hardy and well-adapted to environments where most agricultural crops would fail to survive.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a low-growing, mat-forming habit. Its foliage is covered in fine hairs, which are a specialized adaptation to reduce transpiration and protect the plant from high-altitude solar radiation.
