Suksdorf's dodder (Cuscuta suksdorfii) is an obligate parasitic plant species belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Lacking chlorophyll and true roots, it is incapable of photosynthesis and must rely entirely on its host plant for survival. It uses specialized structures called haustoria to penetrate the host's stem and extract water and nutrients, effectively sapping the host's vitality.
The native range of Cuscuta suksdorfii is concentrated in the western regions of North America. It is not an agricultural crop but rather a serious parasitic weed that poses a threat to both natural vegetation and commercial crops. It occupies specific ecological niches, usually thriving in open areas where potential host species are abundant and susceptible to infestation.
Botanically, the plant consists of thin, thread-like stems that range in color from yellowish to reddish. These stems grow rapidly, twining around the host plant and developing dense clusters of small, pale flowers. The seeds are highly resilient and can remain dormant in the soil for significant periods, ensuring the population persists even after mechanical removal of the above-ground biomass.
The management of this species is entirely focused on eradication and prevention. Because it creates a direct connection with the host's vascular system, standard weed control methods are often insufficient. Effective control requires:

- Sanitation of equipment to prevent spread between fields.
- Early detection and spot treatment with systemic herbicides.
- Crop rotation with non-host species to break the life cycle.
