As an achlorophyllous plant, it completely lacks the ability to perform photosynthesis, meaning it is entirely dependent on its host plant. It draws all necessary water and nutrients directly from the root systems of shrubs, most commonly within the Cistus genus.
The native range of this species is centered around the Mediterranean Basin. It is found across Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and various Mediterranean islands. It thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, specifically within the scrublands known as macquis, which provide the stable conditions and the essential presence of its host plants needed for survival.
Botanically, Cytinus ruber is highly specialized. The main body of the plant remains underground, with only the succulent, vibrant red or magenta inflorescences emerging during the flowering season. These structures are designed to attract pollinators. Below the surface, the plant utilizes specialized haustoria to penetrate the host's roots, facilitating an efficient transport of organic compounds.
In terms of agricultural significance, this plant is not a commercial crop. Because it is a parasitic organism that relies on wild shrubs, it holds no place in modern field cultivation. Its presence is strictly limited to natural ecosystems. Any attempt to cultivate it artificially would require a deep understanding of mycorrhizal associations and the presence of established, healthy host populations.
While not used in traditional agriculture, the species remains an object of scientific interest:
