The plant originates from the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes. This geographical origin defines its strict environmental needs, as it thrives in high-altitude habitats where cool temperatures and constant moisture from cloud cover are persistent throughout the year. It does not possess pseudobulbs, relying instead on its thin, lush leaves for metabolic stability.
Botanically, it is defined by its sympodial growth habit and drooping inflorescences. The flowers are the primary interest for horticulturists due to their complex labellum and unique coloration. The structure is specifically evolved to interact with drosophilid flies for pollination, which is a hallmark of the Dracula genus.
Cultivation requirements involve maintaining a temperature range between 12°C and 18°C. A high-humidity environment, ideally exceeding 80%, is necessary for healthy development. The choice of potting medium is critical; it should consist of long-fiber sphagnum moss or a highly porous mixture of bark and perlite to ensure the roots remain oxygenated without suffering from waterlogging.
Common pests and diseases include spider mites, aphids, and various fungal pathogens associated with stagnant air and excessive moisture levels. To maintain optimal health, growers must ensure excellent ventilation and use clean, mineral-poor water for irrigation.
