Monkey face orchid

The Monkey face orchid (Dracula simia) is a unique species of epiphytic orchid belonging to the genus Dracula within the Orchidaceae family. The plant derives its name from the remarkable resemblance of its flower to a monkey's face, a feature created by the intricate structure of the sepals and the lip. In its natural habitat, it leads an epiphytic life, attaching itself to the trunks and branches of trees within dense cloud forests.

This exotic species originates from the mountainous regions of Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. It typically thrives at elevations ranging from 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level. Given the stable, cool, and humid climate of these regions, successful cultivation requires replicating these high-altitude tropical conditions, where persistent fog ensures constant atmospheric moisture.

Botanically, Dracula simia is a sympodial plant characterized by elongated, bright green, lanceolate leaves. Its flower stalks typically grow downwards; therefore, it is essential to use hanging baskets with pre-cut slots to allow the inflorescences to emerge naturally. The flowers possess a distinct scent reminiscent of ripe oranges, which serves to attract pollinators in the wild.

Agricultural requirements include maintaining a strict temperature regime, ideally around +18...+22°C during the day and cooling down to +10...+12°C at night. The plant is highly sensitive to heat stress and direct sunlight. Watering should be consistent without allowing the substrate to become waterlogged. An ideal growing medium consists of sphagnum moss, charcoal, and coniferous bark pieces to ensure excellent drainage and airflow.

From a horticultural perspective, this species is highly valued as a decorative and collector's plant for greenhouses and conservatories. Maintenance challenges primarily involve managing common pests and pathogens:

• Bacterial and fungal rot resulting from poor water management.
• Spider mites, which thrive in conditions with insufficient air humidity.
• Scale insects and mealybugs, requiring manual monitoring or the application of specialized pesticides.
