Durio kutejensis, commonly known as the Kutai durian or Lai, is a prominent tropical fruit-bearing tree belonging to the Malvaceae family. Unlike its famous relative Durio zibethinus, this species is highly valued for its non-offensive aroma and a rich, creamy, sweet-tasting pulp, making it a favored fruit in its native regions of Borneo.
Originating in the tropical rainforests of Borneo, this species has been traditionally cultivated by indigenous communities and smallholder farmers in Indonesia and Malaysia. It thrives in the warm, humid climate of the equatorial belt, where it is often found in diversified agroforestry systems rather than large-scale monoculture plantations.
Botanically, the tree is characterized by its evergreen foliage and relatively small, distinctively shaped fruits compared to common durian varieties. The skin of the fruit is covered in sharp spines, while the interior segments contain a vibrant yellow to orange-colored aril. The tree's reproductive biology relies on specific pollinators, which is a critical factor for maintaining yields in cultivated orchards.
