The plant originates from tropical Asia and has spread across many tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. It is specifically adapted to wet, swampy environments and frequently thrives in disturbed soil, making it a reliable crop in marginal lands where other cereal species may fail to yield adequately due to waterlogging.
Botanically, it features a tufted growth habit with stems that can reach up to 80 cm in height. The leaves are typically linear and flat, and the inflorescence consists of several racemes arranged along a central axis. Its rapid growth cycle allows for multiple harvests in a single season in optimal warm climates.
Regarding climate and soil, Jungle rice thrives in high-temperature environments with significant moisture. It is particularly tolerant of heavy soils that are often seasonally flooded. The agricultural management involves sowing in well-prepared seedbeds and ensuring adequate water supply to maximize the biomass or grain yield during the peak growing phase.
