Its biological characteristics are so finely tuned to the paddy ecosystem that it often thrives in the exact same conditions as the commercial rice crop itself.
The plant is native to East Asia, the historic cradle of rice cultivation. Over the centuries, it has spread throughout the major rice-growing regions of the world, including parts of Europe, North and South America, and across the Asian continent. Its ability to colonize new areas is largely facilitated by the movement of irrigation water and the use of contaminated rice seed batches.
