The American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera) is a perennial plant species belonging to the Arecaceae family. Unlike the more widely cultivated African oil palm, it is characterized by a creeping or very short, slow-growing stem, which often remains at ground level. This biological trait makes it physically different in habit and easier to manage during the harvesting phase of its life cycle.
Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, this species thrives in humid lowland forests and riverine environments. Its geographical range extends from Honduras through the Amazon basin.
