Mediterranean Spurge

Mediterranean Spurge (Euphorbia characias) is a striking evergreen perennial subshrub belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its distinct architectural form and vivid, lime-colored inflorescences. Native to the Mediterranean region, this plant has evolved to thrive in dry, rocky, and sun-drenched environments.

The botanical structure consists of robust, upright stems covered in narrow, blue-green foliage. The plant produces large, head-like inflorescences composed of numerous tiny flowers surrounded by showy, yellow-green bracts. These blooms emerge in early spring, providing a long-lasting architectural display that remains attractive throughout the growing season.

Cultivation requires specific conditions to mimic its natural habitat. The plant demands full sun and well-drained, porous soil. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established but struggles in heavy, waterlogged soils where root rot can occur rapidly. Choosing a site with excellent drainage is the most critical factor for success in growing this species.

Agronomic maintenance is relatively straightforward, primarily involving the pruning of spent flower spikes. This practice encourages new growth and maintains the plant's structural integrity. Gardeners should exercise caution when handling the plant, as it contains a milky sap that can cause severe skin and eye irritation. Protective gloves should be worn at all times during maintenance.

In landscape design, this plant is used for dry gardens, rockeries, and Mediterranean-style borders. It is generally resistant to most pests; however, aphids or spider mites can occasionally appear in neglected plantings. Fungal diseases are almost exclusively linked to improper watering practices or poorly drained soil, making moisture management the priority for successful cultivation.
