The Mexican beech (Fagus grandifolia subsp. mexicana) is a distinctive tree species within the Fagaceae family. It serves as a significant botanical relic, representing a lineage of beech trees that have adapted to the high-altitude, cloud forest conditions of Mexico. Unlike the typical American beech, this subspecies has evolved to thrive in specific subtropical mountain niches, maintaining unique phenotypic traits.

Its native range is restricted to mountainous regions in central and eastern Mexico, primarily within the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, and Veracruz. This plant is typically found in isolated forest patches at high elevations.
