Dune fescue (Festuca fasciculata Forssk., syn. Vulpia fasciculata) is an annual grass species within the family Poaceae. This plant is uniquely adapted to thrive in harsh, nutrient-poor sandy environments, making it a critical component of coastal dune ecosystems across Europe and the Mediterranean.

The origin of this species is tied to Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal regions, where it has evolved to dominate shifting sands. Unlike many agricultural grasses, it does not require deep, nutrient-rich soils but instead flourishes in substrates where drainage is rapid and competition from larger plant species is minimal.

Botanically, the species typically grows in small, dense tufts, reaching heights of 10 to 40 cm. The leaves are characteristically narrow and often inrolled, a physiological adaptation designed to minimize transpiration during hot, dry periods. The inflorescence is a panicle that appears during its short growing season, typically completed before the onset of extreme summer droughts.

From an agrotechnical perspective, dune fescue is considered a low-maintenance, specialized crop. It requires minimal inputs, as it is naturally selected for survival in marginal soils. Its primary agricultural application lies in phytoremediation and land reclamation, specifically in stabilizing mobile sands and preventing wind erosion in coastal agricultural zones.

Regarding health and pathology, dune fescue is relatively hardy; however, it can be susceptible to common fungal rusts and sporadic infestations by soil-dwelling larvae. While it is rarely harvested for forage due to low biomass production, it plays a vital role in preventing topsoil loss in sandy regions, which helps maintain the surrounding ecological balance of arable lands.
