Description

Fusarium graminearum is a highly destructive phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the Nectriaceae family. It is the primary agent responsible for Fusarium head blight (FHB), a devastating disease affecting various cereal crops, most notably wheat, barley, and maize, by colonizing the flowering spikes of the plants.

The pathogen has a cosmopolitan distribution, occurring in almost all major agricultural regions worldwide. Its prevalence is particularly high in temperate and subtropical climates where high humidity levels during the anthesis stage of cereals create ideal conditions for infection cycles.

Biologically, the fungus persists as mycelium or perithecia on crop residues left on the soil surface. During the growing season, spores (macroconidia and ascospores) are dispersed by wind and rain splashes to the wheat heads. The pathogen thrives in warm conditions, typically between 20°C and 25°C, coupled with significant moisture availability.

Effective management of Fusarium graminearum requires an integrated approach. Essential agricultural practices include crop rotation (avoiding wheat after corn), proper tillage to bury infested debris, and the cultivation of resistant or moderately resistant varieties. Fungicide application at the correct stage of anthesis is also a critical control measure.

The economic impact of this pathogen is severe. Beyond significant yield losses and lower grain test weight, the fungus produces harmful mycotoxins like deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone. Contaminated grain often falls below safety standards for human consumption and livestock feed, resulting in substantial financial losses for farmers.
