Mung bean, classified scientifically as Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata, is a prominent annual legume species in the Fabaceae family. Known globally as a high-protein pulse crop, it is recognized for its quick maturation cycle and adaptability to diverse agricultural systems, making it a critical component of food security in many developing nations.
Originating from the Indian subcontinent, the mung bean has a long history of cultivation throughout Southeast and East Asia. Its range has since expanded to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including significant production areas in Australia, South America, and Africa, where it thrives due to its relative tolerance to heat and moisture stress compared to other legumes.
The plant exhibits an erect or semi-erect growth habit, typically reaching heights of 0.5 to 1 meter. It possesses trifoliate leaves and produces yellow flowers. The pods are elongated and cylindrical, containing small, oval-shaped seeds. These seeds are characterized by a smooth or slightly shiny seed coat, which is most commonly green, though varieties with yellow or black skins also exist.
Mung bean requires a warm climate for optimal growth, with temperatures ideally ranging from 28°C to 35°C. It is highly sensitive to waterlogging, necessitating well-drained loamy or sandy soils. Agronomic management involves precise timing of sowing to avoid cold temperatures and adequate weed control during the first 30 days of growth to ensure the canopy covers the soil effectively.
The economic utility of mung bean is vast, encompassing human nutrition, livestock feed, and soil health improvement. It is a nitrogen-fixing legume that enhances soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. As a crop, it is susceptible to various fungal pathogens and insect pests, necessitating integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to ensure healthy yields and high-quality grain for both local and export markets.
