Oregano (Origanum vulgare L. subsp. hirtum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Often referred to as Greek oregano, this subspecies is highly prized in commercial agriculture for its significant content of aromatic essential oils, primarily carvacrol and thymol. Botanically, it is characterized by its woody stems at the base, opposite leaves, and small, purple or white flowers that bloom in terminal clusters during the peak summer months.

Originating from the Mediterranean region, oregano has successfully adapted to a variety of climates, ranging from temperate zones to more arid environments. As a crop, it requires full sun exposure to reach its maximum oil concentration and flavor profile.
