Round-leaved oregano

Round-leaved oregano (Origanum rotundifolium) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Often referred to as "ornamental oregano," this plant is prized by gardeners for its distinctive, hop-like bracts that create a cascading visual effect during the blooming season, setting it apart from culinary oregano species.

The plant originates from the rocky mountain slopes of Turkey. Its native habitat, characterized by limestone outcrops and well-drained, nutrient-poor soil, has adapted the species to thrive in harsh conditions. This evolutionary background makes it an excellent candidate for low-maintenance, water-wise garden designs in various temperate climates.

Botanically, Origanum rotundifolium features small, rounded, glaucous-green leaves and delicate, arching flower spikes. In terms of cultivation, this species requires full sun and exceptionally well-draining soil. It is highly intolerant of "wet feet," which can cause root rot during winter months. A rocky or sandy substrate with a slightly alkaline pH is optimal. Regular pruning after flowering helps maintain the plant's compact, bushy shape and encourages vigorous growth for the following season.

The primary use of this plant is ornamental, making it a perfect selection for rock gardens, gravel beds, or containers. While it belongs to the oregano genus, it is rarely cultivated for culinary purposes due to its focus on aesthetic traits. Typical pests include aphids, and common diseases are limited to fungal issues caused by stagnant moisture around the root zone.
