Forbes cypress

The Forbes cypress (Hesperocyparis forbesii) is an evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Originally grouped under the genus Cupressus, modern taxonomic revisions have reclassified it into the genus Hesperocyparis. It is highly regarded for its aesthetic appeal and structural significance in various landscape designs, particularly in temperate and Mediterranean-like regions.

Native to the coastal ranges of Southern California and Northern Baja California, this species is naturally found in chaparral ecosystems. It has evolved to thrive in environments characterized by long, hot, dry summers and relatively cool, moist winters. This historical adaptation makes it a robust choice for xeriscaping and sustainable gardening practices in similar climatic zones.

Botanically, Hesperocyparis forbesii typically grows as a medium-sized tree, often with multiple trunks, reaching heights of approximately 5 to 10 meters. Its foliage consists of bright green to yellowish-green scale-like leaves that are densely packed along the branches. The bark is a notable feature, exhibiting a reddish-brown hue and a tendency to exfoliate as the tree matures, adding visual interest to the landscape.
