Common mare's tail (lat. Hippuris vulgaris) is a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. Often referred to as «mare's tail» or «water pine,» the plant features a simple, unbranched, or sparingly branched stem that rises from a creeping rhizome. It is a classic example of a hydrophyte, perfectly adapted to amphibious life.
The native range of this species is circumpolar, extending across the Northern Hemisphere in Europe, Asia, and North America. It thrives in diverse wetland environments, including shallow lakes, slow-moving streams, marshes, and ponds. The plant is remarkably resilient to fluctuations in water levels, allowing it to adapt to varying moisture conditions throughout the growing season.
Botanically, Hippuris vulgaris is defined by its whorled, narrow, linear leaves. Submerged leaves are typically longer and softer, whereas emergent leaves are shorter and more rigid.
