Citrange

Citrange is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from the cross between the sour orange (Citrus x aurantium) and the hardy orange (Citrus trifoliata). Belonging to the Rutaceae family, this plant was developed primarily to combine the high fruit quality of commercial citrus varieties with the exceptional cold tolerance and vigor of the Poncirus parent.

The origin of this hybrid is deeply rooted in citrus breeding programs aimed at expanding the cultivation range of citrus trees. It is widely grown in subtropical and temperate transition zones where seasonal frosts pose a significant risk to conventional citrus groves, making it an essential component of resilient orchard management.

Botanically, citrange trees are often semi-deciduous and feature the characteristic trifoliate leaf structure inherited from the Poncirus species. They are generally equipped with strong thorns on their branches and possess a robust, deep-reaching root system that allows the plant to thrive in diverse environmental conditions and soil profiles.

Cultivation requirements involve selecting well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils. While citrange is notably more tolerant of cold and poor soil conditions than most pure citrus varieties, it thrives when provided with adequate moisture during the growing season and protection from extreme, prolonged freezing temperatures that could damage the graft union.

The primary economic use of citrange is as a rootstock for commercial citrus cultivars. It is valued for its ability to confer cold hardiness, tolerance to specific soil-borne pathogens, and improved tree growth rates to the scion. While the fruit is generally considered inedible due to its high acidity and bitterness, the plant remains a cornerstone of successful citrus nursery production in challenging climates.
