This crop was developed specifically to thrive in regions with milder winters, where traditional northern blueberry varieties fail to meet their chilling hour requirements for flowering and fruit set.
The origins of these hybrids are rooted in the selective breeding of native North American species to combine the large, high-quality berries of the northern highbush blueberry with the heat tolerance and short-dormancy traits of the native southern Vaccinium darrowii. Consequently, they are primarily cultivated in warm-temperate and subtropical climates worldwide.
Botanically, these plants are vigorous growers, often displaying evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage depending on the local climate. They produce high-quality berries characterized by a distinct "bloom," firm texture, and balanced sugar-acid profiles, which makes them a premium product for both local fresh markets and international export.
Cultivation requires specific environmental conditions. They strictly need acidic, well-drained soils with a pH ranging from 4.0 to 5.0.
