As a member of this family, it displays typical characteristics of hydrophytes, maintaining a specialized relationship with its aquatic habitat.
The origin of this species is linked to the tropical regions of Africa. It naturally inhabits wetlands, river basins, and stagnant water zones where the climate remains warm throughout the year. The species is highly sensitive to ecological degradation, and its presence is often used as a biological marker for healthy water quality in its native habitats.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by rosettes of heart-shaped leaves that float on the water surface. The internal structure of the plant is designed to provide buoyancy, with spongy tissues allowing it to stay afloat. It reproduces effectively through vegetative propagation, sending out runners that develop into new plantlets, which helps the species expand its coverage across the water surface rapidly under favorable conditions.
Requirements for its survival include warm water temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C and consistent solar radiation. The plant is not suitable for cultivation in cold or temperate climates unless controlled environment systems like greenhouses or heated aquariums are used. Soil or substrate is rarely needed for its growth, as it draws all necessary nutrients directly from the water column.
Host-use areas primarily focus on research and specialized botanical conservation efforts. Like many hydrophytes, it can face issues with fungal leaf spots if the water becomes stagnant and oxygen levels drop. Pests such as aquatic larvae or snails can occasionally cause damage to the leaf tissues, but these are typically managed through biological control and maintaining a balanced ecosystem in the holding tank.
