The plant originates from the tropical forests of Central and South America. While it is naturally found growing on trees or rock faces as a climber, commercial cultivation involves intensive systems where the plant is supported by trellis structures. It thrives in regions with distinct wet and dry seasons, as this climatic cycle triggers the flowering process necessary for a bountiful harvest.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its succulent, three-angled green stems that possess small, sparse spines.
