Syzygium cumini

Syzygium cumini, widely known as Jambolan, Java plum, or black plum, is an evergreen tropical tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It is highly valued for its dark purple, sweet and tangy fruits, which are popular in many tropical countries for both fresh consumption and traditional food processing.

The plant is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Due to its hardiness and adaptability, it has been introduced to many tropical regions across the globe, including parts of Australia, Africa, and South America, where it thrives in warm, humid environments without frost risks.

Botanically, the tree can reach significant heights, characterized by dense foliage and smooth, leathery leaves that smell like turpentine when crushed. The flowers are fragrant, white or greenish, and appear in clusters. The fruit is a drupe, which transitions from green to deep purple-black as it ripens, containing a single seed surrounded by succulent, astringent, yet sweet pulp.

Regarding cultivation, Syzygium cumini prefers fertile, deep, and well-drained loamy soils, although it is notably tolerant of waterlogged conditions and various soil types. It requires full sunlight for optimal growth and fruit production. Young trees need consistent irrigation, but mature trees possess good drought tolerance, making them suitable for low-maintenance orchards.
