Japanese snowball

Japanese snowball (Viburnum plicatum) is a stunning deciduous shrub belonging to the Adoxaceae family. It is widely admired for its unique horizontal branching habit, which creates a tiered effect that, when covered in large, white, lace-cap or snowball-like flowers, provides an unparalleled display in the spring garden.

Native to East Asia, specifically China, Japan, and Korea, this species has been integrated into landscapes globally. Its natural habitat, often characterized by temperate woodland edges, informs its preference for stable environmental conditions when cultivated in domestic gardens or commercial horticultural projects.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its deeply veined, pleated foliage, which adds texture to the garden even when the plant is not in flower. As the season progresses, the leaves often turn rich shades of burgundy or bronze in the autumn, extending the visual interest of the shrub well beyond the blooming period.

Successful cultivation requires a location with fertile, well-draining soil and consistent moisture.
