Laurustinus (latin Viburnum tinus) is an evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the Adoxaceae family. Unlike its deciduous relatives, this species maintains its dense, leathery, dark green foliage year-round, making it a staple in Mediterranean-style landscaping and architectural gardens.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin, with a natural range encompassing Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Due to its Mediterranean origins, it thrives in temperate climates. In colder regions, it is often cultivated as a container plant or grown in protected conservatory environments to prevent frost damage.
Botanically, it is a sturdy, rounded shrub reaching heights of 2 to 4 meters. Its leaves are opposite, ovate, and glossy.
