Scarlet runner bean (Latin: Phaseolus coccineus) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. In agricultural practice, it is primarily grown as an annual vegetable crop. It is highly valued not only for its nutrient-dense seeds and pods but also for its rapid climbing growth habit and vibrant, showy flowers, making it a popular choice for both farms and home gardens.

The species originated in the highland regions of Central and South America. Due to its popularity, it has been introduced to temperate zones globally. While it can act as a perennial in frost-free regions due to its tuberous root system, most commercial cultivation treats it as a tender annual that requires a long growing season to produce mature seeds effectively.

Botanically, it is a vigorous vine that can reach heights of up to 5 meters. Its leaves are trifoliate, and the flowers are arranged in long racemes, typically featuring a brilliant scarlet color, although white and pink varieties also exist. The fruits are thick, textured pods containing large seeds. These seeds are a rich source of plant-based protein, dietary fiber, and essential minerals.

Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions, including well-drained, fertile soil and full sun exposure. The crop is sensitive to cold and should be planted only after the danger of frost has passed. Farmers must ensure proper support systems, such as stakes or trellises, to keep the foliage off the ground, which improves air circulation and prevents disease outbreaks.
