Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) is a unique cultivar of cabbage belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Unlike other cabbages, kohlrabi is grown for its swollen, bulbous stem, which develops just above the ground. This edible portion is prized for its crisp texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor, making it a popular choice for both raw consumption in salads and cooked culinary dishes.

Originating in Northern Europe, kohlrabi has become a staple crop in cool-climate regions worldwide. It is highly valued for its nutritional profile, being exceptionally rich in vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber. Due to its short life cycle, kohlrabi is an excellent vegetable for market gardeners and home growers who aim for multiple harvests within a single growing season.

Botanically, kohlrabi is a biennial plant. In its first year, it develops a rosette of leaves and the characteristic enlarged stem, while the second year is dedicated to flowering and seed production. The stem color varies by variety, ranging from pale green to deep purple. Regardless of color, the internal flesh remains uniformly white and requires harvesting before the stem grows too large to avoid a woody texture.

Successful kohlrabi cultivation depends on consistent growing conditions. It thrives in cool temperatures (15–20°C) and requires fertile, well-draining soil with a near-neutral pH level. Regular irrigation is critical; fluctuating soil moisture is the primary cause of stem cracking or premature woodiness. The crop responds well to organic matter incorporation, which helps maintain soil moisture and fertility throughout the rapid growth phase.

Pest management is a key aspect of growing kohlrabi, as it shares common enemies with all cruciferous crops. Flea beetles, cabbage loopers, and root maggots can cause significant damage to young plants. Cultural controls, such as the use of floating row covers and practicing strict crop rotation, are highly recommended to minimize chemical reliance. Diseases like clubroot and bacterial soft rot are best managed by maintaining good drainage and sanitation practices.
