Korean velvet grass

Korean velvet grass (Zoysia tenuifolia Willd. ex Thiele) is a perennial grass species within the Poaceae family. Known for its extremely fine texture and low-growing habit, it is widely regarded as one of the most aesthetic turfgrasses available for specialized landscaping and ornamental purposes.

The plant is native to the warm-temperate and tropical regions of East and Southeast Asia, including parts of Japan, China, and Korea. Over the years, it has been introduced to various regions globally where climate conditions allow for its survival, primarily in environments characterized by mild winters and hot summers, as it is not tolerant to heavy frost.

Botanically, this grass is distinctive for its soft, thread-like leaves that grow in a dense, clump-forming, or spreading mat. It propagates primarily through creeping rhizomes and stolons. Unlike common turf grasses, it has a very slow vertical growth rate, which significantly reduces the need for frequent mowing and helps maintain a uniform, velvet-like surface.

To thrive, Korean velvet grass requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but performs best when provided with regular, deep watering during dry spells. Soil fertility should be managed through balanced nitrogen applications, particularly during the peak growing season, to ensure the grass maintains its deep green, lush appearance.

In terms of agricultural and landscape usage, this species is typically selected for high-end decorative lawns, rock gardens, and areas where a low-maintenance ground cover is required. While it is generally resistant to pests, growers should monitor for common turf diseases, such as leaf spot or patch diseases, which can arise if drainage is poor or if excessive humidity occurs.
