Japanese clover (lat. Kummerowia striata) is an annual legume belonging to the Fabaceae family. Formerly classified within the genus Lespedeza, this species is highly valued in modern agriculture for its resilience, forage quality, and nitrogen-fixing capabilities, which significantly contribute to the enhancement of soil fertility.

The plant originates from East Asia, including regions in Japan, Korea, and China. It has successfully naturalized in various parts of the world, particularly in North America, where it is utilized extensively as a low-maintenance forage crop for livestock. It is particularly notable for its ability to thrive on acidic, low-fertility soils where more demanding forage legumes often fail to establish.

Botanically, it is a low-growing, spreading plant with slender, branched stems ranging from 10 to 40 cm in height. The foliage consists of trifoliate leaves with prominent venation. Flowering typically occurs from mid-summer through early autumn, producing small pinkish-purple blossoms. Its deep, well-developed taproot system grants the plant remarkable drought tolerance during the growing season.

Regarding cultivation requirements, Japanese clover thrives in full sun and is exceptionally adaptable to poor soil conditions. It does not require intensive fertilization or soil modification. Effective agrotechnical management involves ensuring a weed-free seedbed prior to spring planting. Once established, the crop is robust and generally requires little intervention, though timely harvesting is key to maximizing nutritional output.

The primary agricultural use of the crop is forage production for grazing animals, as it maintains high nutritional value even when mature. Additionally, it serves as an excellent cover crop to combat soil erosion and improve organic matter content. Its dense canopy effectively suppresses weeds, making it a valuable tool in sustainable farming practices and soil conservation programs.
