Regal pelargonium (Pelargonium x domesticum), often called the Martha Washington geranium, is a distinguished member of the Geraniaceae family. This ornamental crop is widely recognized for its large, funnel-shaped flowers that display a rich variety of colors, often featuring intricate patterns, dark blotches, or veins on the petals.
Originating from the wild species of South Africa, this plant has been selectively bred for its decorative properties. In agricultural and horticultural practice, it is strictly managed as a container or greenhouse crop. Unlike common zonal geraniums, it requires precise environmental controls to transition from the vegetative phase to the reproductive flowering phase.
Botanically, it forms a bushy, upright habit with firm, often crinkled or toothed foliage. The flowers grow in clusters and are significantly larger than those of other Pelargonium species. For optimal growth, the crop demands a high-quality, well-draining peat-based growing medium with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.5 to ensure nutrient uptake and healthy root development.
Cultural requirements involve bright, indirect light and a strict period of cool dormancy during winter. Temperatures should remain between 10°C and 15°C for several weeks to induce bud set. During the active growing season, consistent moisture is necessary, but the soil must be allowed to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root-zone suffocation and fungal issues.
The management of pests and diseases is a critical component of successful production. Common issues include:
- Whiteflies and spider mites that thrive in warm, dry environments.
- Botrytis (grey mold) and root rot, which are triggered by overwatering or poor air circulation.
- Aphids that target tender stems and young foliage.
