Regal pelargonium

Regal pelargonium (Pelargonium grandiflorum) is a prestigious ornamental crop belonging to the Geraniaceae family. Known for its large, showy, and often multi-colored flowers, this perennial shrub is highly valued in the nursery industry for greenhouse production and indoor ornamental use.

Originating from South Africa, this species thrives in climates where temperature and moisture can be effectively managed. Unlike common bedding geraniums, the Regal type is typically grown as a container plant in temperate regions, requiring specific environmental cues to trigger its impressive blooming cycle.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by sturdy, woody stems and large, crinkled, serrated leaves. The flowers are the primary commercial feature; they can reach up to 7 cm in diameter and exhibit a wide range of colors, including vibrant shades of pink, purple, red, and white, often highlighted by intricate blotches or veining on the petals.

The agrotechnical requirements are precise: the plant demands well-drained, nutrient-rich potting media with a neutral pH. Adequate sunlight is essential for growth, but direct, intense sun should be avoided to prevent foliage burn. A crucial part of the cultivation cycle is the cool winter dormancy period (10–15°C), which is necessary for the plant to set flower buds for the coming season.

Common plant health challenges include pest infestations like aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Furthermore, pathogens such as Botrytis (gray mold) can severely affect plants under high humidity conditions. Implementing strict irrigation management and ensuring proper ventilation are the key strategies to minimize disease outbreaks and maintain high-quality decorative stock.
