Historically linked to the genus Scabiosa, it has been reclassified into the Lomelosia genus due to specific morphological characteristics. This plant is highly regarded in horticulture for its distinct silvery-green foliage and delicate, globose flowers.

The plant is native to the mountainous regions of Southern and Central Europe, where it inhabits dry rocky slopes and limestone grasslands. This natural environment has shaped the plant's resilience, making it a perfect candidate for xeriscaping or gardens with limited water availability. It is well-adapted to high UV exposure and significant temperature variations typical of mountainous terrains.
