Luffa aegyptiaca Mill., commonly known as the smooth loofah or sponge gourd, is an annual climbing vine belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. This plant is widely recognized for its fibrous interior, which serves as a natural, biodegradable sponge after the fruit matures and is processed.

Native to tropical regions of Asia and Africa, the plant has a long history of cultivation in warm climates. Due to its tropical origins, it requires a long, frost-free growing season to reach full maturity. In northern latitudes, growers often utilize greenhouses or start seeds indoors weeks before the last spring frost to ensure the fruits have sufficient time to develop.

The botanical structure of the plant features vigorous vines that can reach lengths of several meters, requiring robust support systems. The fruits are cylindrical, initially green and fleshy, but as they ripen, the internal tissue develops into a dense network of cellulose fibers.
