Button medick

Medicago orbicularis (L.) Bartal.

Description

Button medick (scientific name: Medicago orbicularis) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is recognized in agriculture as a valuable forage crop, particularly valued for its adaptability to Mediterranean-type climates and its significant contribution to soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin and has spread across various regions in Southern Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It is well-adapted to arid environments, making it an excellent candidate for pasture improvement in drylands where water availability is a limiting factor for traditional forage legumes.

Botanically, it is characterized by its prostrate stems and distinctive seed pods. The pods are spirally coiled, hairless, and look like small, flat, round buttons, which is the origin of its common English name. The foliage consists of trifoliate leaves, and the plant can form dense mats, providing excellent ground cover.

Regarding agronomic requirements, Button medick thrives in well-drained, alkaline or calcareous soils. It prefers sunny locations and is capable of germinating early in the season to capitalize on winter and spring moisture. Proper seedbed preparation is essential to ensure adequate soil-to-seed contact and high germination rates.

Its primary agricultural use includes serving as a high-quality forage source for livestock and as a cover crop for soil health.

  • Provides highly nutritious biomass rich in protein for sheep and cattle.
  • Significantly enhances soil structure and fertility through symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
  • Acts as an effective ground cover to prevent soil erosion in orchards and fields.
  • Demonstrates excellent resilience in semi-arid grazing systems.

The crop is susceptible to certain fungal diseases, such as leaf spot and powdery mildew, especially under high humidity. Pests like aphids and weevils may occasionally affect stands. Agronomists recommend monitoring for pest presence and rotating crops to disrupt the life cycles of pathogens and maintain a healthy field environment.
