Alfalfa

Medicago sativa L.

Description

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), often referred to as lucerne, is a perennial flowering plant in the legume family (Fabaceae). It is globally recognized as the most important forage crop for livestock due to its high nutritional value, protein content, and nitrogen-fixing abilities that significantly improve soil fertility for subsequent crops.

Native to south-central Asia, alfalfa is now cultivated worldwide in temperate and arid climates. Its defining biological feature is an incredibly deep taproot system, which can reach depths of up to 10 meters, allowing the plant to access deep soil moisture and survive prolonged drought periods that would devastate other agricultural crops.

Successful production requires well-drained, deep, and fertile soils with a neutral pH. Alfalfa is highly sensitive to waterlogging and soil acidity. Agronomic management involves precise seedbed preparation, timely sowing, and careful weed control during the establishment year. The crop is typically harvested several times per season, with the optimal timing determined by the early flowering stage to balance total biomass yield and feed quality.

Beyond its use as livestock feed—primarily in the form of hay, silage, and pellets—alfalfa plays a vital role in sustainable agriculture. As a legume, it performs symbiotic nitrogen fixation, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. It is also an excellent rotation crop that breaks disease cycles for cereals and helps to improve soil structure through its dense, deep-reaching root architecture.

Alfalfa is susceptible to several pathogens and pests that can impact stand longevity and yield. Major diseases include anthracnose, verticillium wilt, rhizoctonia, sclerotinia, charcoal rot, gray mold, and downy mildew, along with nematode infestations. The main insect pests causing economic damage are greenhouse whitefly, leaf beetles, alfalfa weevil, pea seed beetle, gall midges, and the beet webworm.
