Description

The Giant polypore (Meripilus giganteus) belongs to the family Meripilaceae and is recognized as a significant wood-rotting fungus in forest ecosystems. It is best known for its massive fruiting bodies that form large clusters, often appearing at the base of broadleaf trees like oak and beech.

Originating in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, this species is widespread across Europe and North America. It thrives in humid, shaded forest environments where it occupies a dual ecological niche: as a root-infecting pathogen that causes white rot, and as a saprotroph that eventually decomposes dead stumps.

Botanically, the fungus is characterized by overlapping, fan-shaped caps that are fleshy and creamy-white when young. A key diagnostic feature is the rapid discoloration of the tissue; when handled or damaged, the fruiting body stains dark brown or black. The hymenium consists of fine pores that remain white to yellowish.

Cultivation of Meripilus giganteus is generally not practiced for commercial food production due to its parasitic nature and slow growth rate. Research into its growth requirements focuses on substrate composition, particularly its ability to break down lignin and cellulose, which provides insights for biotechnological waste management.
