Micranthemum glomeratum is a small, versatile freshwater plant belonging to the Phrymaceae family. Highly prized in the aquarium hobby, it is frequently used in aquascaping to create lush, bright green foreground or midground carpets. Its delicate appearance and growth habit make it a favorite for creating naturalistic underwater landscapes.
The plant originates from North America, specifically occurring in the southeastern United States. In its natural habitat, it thrives in moist environments, including stream banks and wetlands. This background as a marginal plant allows it to adapt to submerged conditions, provided that the water chemistry and light availability meet its requirements.
Botanically, it is characterized by creeping stems that branch out extensively to form dense clusters. The leaves are tiny, ovate, and arranged in opposite pairs along the stem, displaying a vibrant light green coloration. Unlike some robust aquatic plants, its root system is relatively shallow, acting primarily as an anchor in the substrate while the leaves absorb nutrients directly from the water column.
Optimal growth requires high light intensity, supplemental CO2 injection, and a consistent fertilization regimen to support its fast growth rate. The plant prefers soft to moderately hard water with a temperature range between 20°C and 28°C. Without these conditions, the plant may become leggy or lose its dense, bushy structure, necessitating frequent pruning to encourage lateral branching.
In terms of usage, it is strictly an ornamental species employed for its aesthetic value in high-tech planted aquariums. While generally resilient, the plant is susceptible to various algae species if nutrient levels are imbalanced or if there is insufficient flow. Disease in the traditional agricultural sense is uncommon, though chlorosis or necrosis of the lower leaves often occurs due to lack of light penetration, requiring proactive maintenance.
