The species is native to the eastern parts of the United States, where it naturally inhabits moist, aquatic environments such as riverbanks and wetlands. Its natural ability to thrive in fluctuating water levels makes it a resilient choice for home aquarium setups and humid terrariums.

Botanically, it features delicate, branching stems covered with tiny, rounded leaves. When provided with optimal conditions, the plant grows quite rapidly, spreading horizontally and vertically. It is known for its high growth rate, which requires constant trimming to maintain a desired shape and density.

Successful cultivation requires intense lighting, nutrient-rich substrate, and consistent fertilization. While it can grow in low-light conditions, it becomes leggy and loses its aesthetic appeal; therefore, high light levels combined with CO2 injection are recommended. The ideal water temperature range is typically between 20°C and 28°C.
