Arctic sandwort

Arctic sandwort (Minuartia arctica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. In its natural habitat, it forms dense mats or cushions, making it a highly prized specimen for alpine and rock garden horticulture in northern climates.

The native range of this species encompasses the Arctic and subarctic regions of Eurasia and North America. It is perfectly adapted to cold environments, thriving in tundra zones and high-altitude areas where it withstands extreme temperature fluctuations and harsh winds throughout the year.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by creeping stems densely covered in narrow, linear leaves. It produces small, star-shaped white flowers that emerge during the short arctic summer, creating a visually striking display across the barren landscape where it resides.

Successful cultivation of Arctic sandwort requires well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil with minimal organic matter. It is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, so horticultural practices must prioritize excellent drainage to mimic the rocky, arid conditions of its natural alpine environment.

The primary use of this species is in landscape design, specifically for rock gardens, trough gardens, and as a ground cover in cooler climates. While the plant is quite hardy, it is susceptible to root rot if overwatered, necessitating careful monitoring of soil moisture levels in a domestic garden setting.
