The plant originates from Southern Africa but has become a major agricultural concern in regions such as Australia, where it thrives in Mediterranean-type climates. It typically colonizes degraded pastures, roadsides, and lands where the native vegetation cover has been disturbed, taking advantage of open areas to establish dense, localized colonies.

Botanically, Moraea flaccida is distinguished by its single long leaf and branched flowering stems bearing showy, orange-to-yellow flowers.
