Moraea is a genus of perennial cormous plants belonging to the Iridaceae family. Known often as "butterfly irises," these hybrids are highly valued for their complex, iris-like flowers and architectural foliage. While primarily grown for ornamental purposes, they require specific cultural conditions that mimic their native South African habitat to thrive successfully in managed landscapes.

Originating from the diverse climates of Southern Africa, Moraea species and their hybrids are adapted to environments with distinct wet and dry seasons. This cycle is critical to their cultivation; in non-native regions, these plants are best suited for greenhouse conditions or container gardening, where moisture levels can be strictly regulated to prevent physiological stress.

Botanically, these plants are defined by a corm — a specialized underground storage organ that sustains the plant during dormancy. The leaves are typically linear, basal, and grass-like, while the flowers are arranged on distinct stems. The floral morphology is intricate, featuring tepals that are often patterned with contrasting colors, enhancing their visual appeal for horticultural collection.

Successful production requires a high-quality, free-draining substrate. Because these plants are highly susceptible to basal rot, the potting mix should contain significant proportions of coarse sand or perlite. They thrive in full sun but require protection from extreme midday heat. Fertilization should be moderate, utilizing a balanced liquid feed during the active growing season and withholding all water once the foliage begins to yellow.
