Musanga cecropioides, commonly known as the African umbrella tree or corkwood, is a fast-growing plant species belonging to the Urticaceae family. It is widely recognized for its rapid biomass production and its significant ecological role as a pioneer species in the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa.
The origin of this species is tied to the humid lowlands of the African continent. It is highly valued in agroforestry for its ability to quickly colonize degraded or abandoned farmlands, effectively restoring the soil structure and providing shade for more sensitive crops.
